Justice Department available in case of election abuses

PORTLAND -- The U.S. Attorney's office in Maine has designated two prosecutors to head up efforts to respond to reports of election fraud and voting rights abuse in Tuesday's election.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys James L. McCarthy in the Bangor office and David Joyce in the Portland office will be working through the day while polling places are open so they can respond to any complaints.

The FBI also will have special agents available in each field office to receive allegations of fraud and election abuses. The FBI can be contacted at 774-9322 in Portland, 622-2902 in Augusta and 947-6670 in Bangor during business hours and at 617-742-5533 after hours.

Complaints about ballot access problems or discrimination can be made directly to the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division's Voting Section at 1-800-253-3931.

People who feel the'yre right to vote may have been interfered with also can contact the Maine Civil Liberties Union at 774-5444.
