Survey: Maine voters back change and continuity

By The Associated Press wire report November 05, 2008 12:45 AM

Results from exit polls conducted for The Associated Press and television networks in Maine.

TICKET SPLITTING
Maine voters, showing open-mindedness of their own, rewarded Republican Sen. Susan Collins' assertions of her independence even as they gave their top-of-the-ticket presidential nod to Democrat Barack Obama. In many respects, Obama and Collins both drew from the same well. Exit polls in Maine showed about one-third of Obama voters going with Collins and more than one-third of Collins voters supporting Obama.

OBAMA'S REACH
Obama won among self-described moderate voters by about 2-1 and by close to that among voters calling themselves political independents. He also won among all income groups, including by close to 3-1 among those with total family income of less than $15,000.

COLLINS' REACH
Self-styled moderates made up Collins' biggest bloc of supporters. And at least as many of her voters described themselves as independents as did those who said they were Republicans.
