Senate Minority Leader Carol Weston, R-Montville, said today that Republicans will request recounts in two close Senate races in which incumbent Republicans apparently lost.

Republicans want a recount in the Senate District 15 race in which Rep. Deborah Simpson, D-Auburn, defeated incumbent Sen. Lois Snowe-Mello, R- Poland by 102 votes out of nearly 20,000 votes cast, according to election night totals.

Also, they are requesting a recount in Senate District 19, where Democrat Seth Goodall of Richmond defeated incumbent Sen. Paula Benoit, R-Phippsburg, by 122 votes out of more than 22,000 votes cast.

Candidates have until 5 p.m. Wednesday to request recounts, according to the Secretary of State's Office.
