BATH -- And so it ends.
Waterville overcame an early goal to dominate the rest of the way, beating Gorham 5-1 for the Class A girls' soccer championship Saturday afternoon.
Gorham had won the last three state championships and had brought a 70-game unbeaten streak into the game.
"It's okay,'' said Jeanne Zarrilli, coach of Gorham. "Waterville exposed our weaknesses and we lost to the better team.''
Jordan Pellerin scored two goals for the Panthers while Paige Gardiner had a goal and two assists and Stephanie Whitten had three assists.
Waterville, winning its first title since 1984, finished 18-0 while Gorham finished 17-1. Gorham had beaten Waterville in the state game last year.
Rachele Burns had given Gorham a 1-0 lead just 1:43 into the game. But Waterville, faster and more aggressive, tied it with 29:09 left in the first half on a goal by Gardiner. Then Pellerin scored twice, both times on headers set up by Gardiner, to make it 3-1 at the half.
"This feels great,'' said Gardiner. "It's something we've worked for for a very long time.''
