HARPSWELL -- A building at Great Island Boat Yard was destroyed in an early morning fire today.

About 50 firefighters from six fire departments fought the blaze, according to Ben Wallace, the Cundy's Harbor fire chief. The fire at 419 Harpswell Island Road was reported at 1:06 a.m.

No one was in the building, which housed a showroom and attached boat shop, Wallace said. No boats were damaged in the fire, he said.

The cause isn't yet known. Wallace said the state fire marshal's office is investigating.
