Feds urge seniors to examine drug coverage

By Susan M. Cover November 10, 2008 11:58 AM

AUGUSTA -- Federal officials visited the state today to remind Medicare-eligible Mainers to check their prescription drug coverage to make sure it's the most appropriate and affordable of the 46 plans available.

"Plans change, you change, shop and compare," said Tevi D. Troy, the deputy secretary of Health and Human Services.

Between Nov. 15 and Dec. 31, those enrolled can change their plan to best reflect their current needs.

Here's how to examine your coverage:

• Call 1-800-633-4227 to get help from a trained Medicare representative.

• Visit www.medicare.gov to get an estimate of your out-of-pocket costs for the year.

• See the listing of plans in your Medicare & You handbook.

• Locally, you can get help from Spectrum Generations, at 1-800-639-1553.
