BOSTON -- The cost of a gallon of regular gas in Maine continues to tumble, with the average price statewide at $2.40.

The AAA reported today that the price has fallen 85 cents a gallon in the past month, and is down $1.74 from a peak of $4.14 a gallon on July 16, according to AAA.

The average price in Maine is 16 cents above the national average of $2.24.

The AAA bases its price reports on credit card transactions at more than 85,000 stations around the country.
