Maine State Pier project in doubt

By Dennis Hoey Portland Press Herald Staff Writer November 12, 2008 07:02 PM

A Portland City Council committee has recommended that the city terminate its agreement with the firm it chose to redevelop the Maine State Pier.

The three members of the council's Community Development Committee on Wednesday night unanimously recommended that negotiations with The Olympia Cos. be terminated. Their vote was made public after the committee met in executive session with its attorney.

A press conference has been scheduled for Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in Portland City Hall to explain the decision. The full City Council will render a final decision on the matter at its Monday night meeting.

Both sides said negotiations fell apart after the state of Maine asserted its ownership rights to the land below the pier.
