GEORGETOWN -- The Coast Guard investigated the sightings of four red flares Monday night, in the vicinity of Seguin Island Lighthouse off the coast of Georgetown.

A jet from the Coast Guard station on Cape Cod flew over the Maine coast late Monday night, but the crew was unable to find any evidence of a boater in distress.

A 47-foot motorboat out of the Coast Guard station in Boothbay Harbor also patrolled the area around the lighthouse, which is located at the mouth of the Kennebec River between Popham Beach State Park and Georgetown.

Coast Guard officials said a similar sighting of red flares over the coast of North Carolina was reported around the same time. The Coast Guard said the flares may have been meteorites.
