AUGUSTA -- Police are searching for a person who robbed the Gardiner Savings Bank of Maine on State Street early this morning.
Sgt. Chris Massey of the Augusta Police Department said the call came in about 8:45 a.m.
The male suspect handed a bank employee a note demanding money. A weapon was not displayed. The suspect left the bank on foot and was last seen on Winthrop Street travelling towards Water Street.
Massey said detectives are investigating the scene at this time interviewing bank employees.
"It looks like it's a male suspect who left with an undisclosed amount of cash," Massey said. "He fled on foot and it looks like he got into a vehicle in this area. We determined that from the canine track we did. He fled east from the bank down Winthrop Street."
He said the robber is about 5-foot-6-inches tall and 160 pounds. He's wearing blue jeans, a white sweat shirt with a brown corduroy jacket. Earlier, police dispatch said the man had a black mask and was carrying a white shopping bag.
Massey said no one in the bank was hurt.
Anyone with information about the robbery may call the police department at 626-2370.
