UMF forum: What motivates social activists?

By Betty Jespersen Morning Sentinel reporter November 18, 2008 10:23 AM

FARMINGTON - The public is invited to join in a conversation about how beliefs and values motivate social activists at the University of Maine at Farmington on Thursday afternoon.

The event will be held at 11:45 a.m. in North Dining Hall A in the Olsen Student Center as part of the Common Ground series.

Facilitated by Dean of Arts and Sciences Rob Lively, this roundtable conversation will include the perspectives of activists on our campus and in the local community. The point is to inquire what motivates people to become activists and what keeps them going.

Those invited include people who are Buddhist, Jewish, Christian and believers in other faiths as well as some who don't count themselves as religious at all. All attendees will be invited to share their views and to inquire about those of others. After the conversation, groups which have organized projects to be of service locally and far away will be available to give out further information.

This is part of the year-long series on activism hosted by the UMF Diversity Committee: Engaging Today. Changing Tomorrow.
