USM president to detail budget cuts

Selman Botman, president of the University of Southern Maine, plans to meet with faculty and other staff members on Monday to let them know how the state's projected $150 million revenue shortfall will impact the school.

Gov. John Baldacci has asked all state agencies to cut spending this year to avoid a deficit. As a result, USM may have to eliminate as much as $3.2 million of its $44 million state appropriation. USM's budget this year is $115 million, including student tuition and fees.

Robert Caswell, university spokesman, said Botman will know by Friday exactly how much she must cut from the current budget and will tell her staff on Monday where those cuts likely will be made.

Botman has scheduled three forums on Monday: from 9 to 10 a.m., Hastings Formal Lounge, Gorham campus; from noon to 1 p.m., Room 170, Lewiston-Auburn College; and from 3 to 4 p.m., Hannaford Lecture Hall, Portland campus.

Botman also plans to meet with student representatives.
