Standish council to meet on store incident

By John Richardson Portland Press Herald Staff Reporter November 19, 2008 10:36 AM

The Standish Town Council will hold a special meeting Thursday to discuss a local store's recent display of a sign asking people to place bets on the assassination of President-elect Barack Obama.

The sign at the Oak Hill General Store asked customers to bet $1 on the date Obama would be assassinated and said "Let's hope someone wins." It made national news as one of a series of racially charged incidents or threats of violence in Maine and around the country after the election.

State lawmakers said Tuesday they will introduce a legislative resolve to condemn the incidents. The Town Council decided today to call a special meeting to discuss the local incident with residents, and is expected to consider passing its own resolve.

The meeting will be held at 1 p.m. at Standish Town Hall on Route 35.
