BANGOR -- A federal jury in Bangor has resumed deliberations in the trial of a former Maine tribal governor and ex-business manager accused of misusing $1.7 million in federal funds.
Jurors were back at work Wednesday, weighing testimony and sorting through thousands of pages of documents on day 12 of the trial of Robert Newell, former Indian Township Passamaquoddy governor, and James Parisi Jr. of Portland, the former business manager.
Newell acknowledged moving or approving moving money from one tribal account to another to meet tribal expenses, but told the jury he never intended to break the law. Newell also denied conspiring with Parisi in an effort to use tribal money illegally. Parisi did not testify.
The alleged transfers took place between Oct. 1, 2002, and Sept. 30, 2006.
