AUGUSTA -- Firefighters have found the body of a woman inside a small Porter Street home that caught fire early this afternoon.
Augusta Fire Chief Robert Audette said the woman has not been identified and that an investigator with the state Fire Marshal's Office has been called to assist.
Records at Augusta City Hall show the home belongs to Margaret M. Rivers. The 1950 one-story, hipped roof home has been in the Rivers family since 1967.
Neighbors said they believed Rivers lived alone.
The fire was reported around noon.
Susan Greenlaw, a neighbor home on her lunch break, said she yelled for the homeowner while calling for help, but had no answer.
Augusta police closed a section of Eastern Avenue, detouring traffic through the Mayfair neighborhood.
