AUGUSTA -- Valley High School graduate Kristin Baker scored a team-high 16 points and handed out eight assists as the University of Maine defeated the University of Massachusetts, 54-45, in women's basketball action Sunday afternoon at the Augusta Civic Center.

Maine (1-2) trailed 13-3 early but got a spark from freshman Sam Wheeler, who played 24 minutes off the bench and led a defense that held the Minutewomen to 17 points in the second half.

Cerie Mosgrove hit six 3-pointers and scored a game-high 19 points for UMass (2-2). Samantha Baranowski added 15 points for UMaine.
