UMF, Unity called 'colleges of distinction’

Unity College and the University of Maine at Farmington have received accolades as "colleges of distinction" from the 2008-2009 guidebook of the same name.

About 40 colleges were selected from each of six regions in the U.S. These "hidden gems" had to meet four key criteria to be included in the guidebook: engaged students, great teaching, vibrant communities, and successful outcomes. A review board of academicians, guidance counselors and parents made the selections.

In a statement, Unity College officials said they were honored to be recognized.
"The four distinctions mirror our own values, which are critical factors in the college search process," said Alisa Johnson, dean of enrollment management at Unity College.

To be considered, Unity College and the University of Maine at Farmington had to: send in applications; be nationally recognized by education professionals; employ "outstanding" teachers who provide "innovative learning experiences"; have an active campus and community that allows for personal development; and be highly valued by employers for its "outstanding preparation."

The Colleges of Distinction guidebook is produced by Student Horizons, Inc., a digital services company headquartered in Bethesda, Md. The college guide first started in 2002 as a Web-only listing and this is the first year Student Horizons will be publishing a printed guidebook.
