Wintry weather sends cars spinning

SKOWHEGAN - A dozen or more automobile accidents were reported early this morning as the region got its first taste of winter-like weather.

Reports first starting coming into the Somerset County communications center in Skowhegan just after 4 a.m. with an accident on South Reynolds Road in Winslow.

Traffic accidents clustered around 5:30 a.m., with one on Davis Road in Fairfield, another on Route 2 in Mercer and others on River Road in Madison and on the Madison Road in Norridgewock.

More accidents followed on the Hinckley Road and Double R Drive in Clinton, the Waterville Road in Skowhegan and several more in Norridgewock, St. Albans, Pittsfield and Canaan until about 7:45 a.m.

A winter-storm warning remains in effect for 4 to 8 inches of snow across the mountains of western Maine for today and into tonight.

A winter-weather advisory remains in effect for 3 to 6 inches of snow for the foothills of western Maine, according to the National Weather Service.
