Kennebunk police open anonymous tip lines

KENNEBUNK -- The public has two new ways to communicate with the Police Department.

Police have created a new anonymous telephone tip line and an anonymous e-mail address. Police say they will not know the identities of people who use these methods of communication.

The hope is that people will feel more comfortable reporting criminal activity if they do not have to reveal their identities.

Police said the anonymous e-mail system may also encourage people to ask questions they may be reluctant to talk about in person or on the telephone, whether it's because they are uncomfortable or too busy.

The telephone tip line can be reached at 985-2102, ext. 1622.

The e-mail address is anonymous@kennebunkmaine.us.

Chief Robert. F. Mackenzie said in a statement that he is glad to be providing these services without spending community funds. He said the public can also use these methods to make suggestions about improving police services.
