A Wells man was taken to Portsmouth Regional Hospital following a head-on collision in York this morning.

Robert Mantica, 55, was headed south on Route 1 in a 1993 Mazda Miata convertible when he lost control and crashed head-on into a 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier driven north by Voichita Cimpeanu, 26, of Ogunquit, in front of the Lobster Barn at 7:19 a.m.

"It was very slippery this morning," said Officer Scott Randall. Both drivers had to be cut free from the wreckage by rescue workers using extrication tools.

Mantica was taken to Portsmouth Hospital with broken bones in his chest and leg. Cimpeanu was taken to York Hospital for cuts.

The motorists' conditions were not immediately available.
