Great Chili & Chowder Challenge evaporates

By Meredith Goad mgoad December 02, 2008 03:10 PM

The Great Chili & Chowder Challenge, a longtime Portland tradition that benefits the People's Regional Opportunity Program, is no more.

PROP has announced it is putting together a late-winter "Family Expo" instead, an event with vendors that PROP is hoping will attract 3,000 to 5,000 people, more than the chili and chowder festival. Admission will be free.

Hundreds of people bought tickets for the Chili & Chowder Challenge every year, and it became a February tradition for some families. Participants sampled steaming cups of chili and chowder prepared by Maine restaurants, then voted on their favorites. The event raised money for PROP's Foster Grandparent program.

The new event will feature activities such as games for children, educational opportunities, and fitness demonstrations.
