Fire damages Readfield garage

By Craig Crosby Kennebec Journal Staff Writer December 02, 2008 03:32 PM

READFIELD -- A garage suffered minor damage and a nearby home was spared thanks to firefighters' quick response to a blaze that broke out Monday evening.

The fire broke out in the two-car garage at 225 Chase Road just before 9 p.m. Firefighters had the flames under control within 20 minutes of the first crew's arrival, said Chief Matt Dunn of the Readfield Fire Department.

The fire never threatened the main house, which rests about 20 feet from the garage.

Dunn did not know who owned the property or whether it was insured. The most recent records at the town office indicate the property is owned by John and Darlene McMahon.

Firefighters are uncertain how the fire started, but it is not suspicious.

"It looked like maybe it started from ashes out of the wood stove," Dunn said.

The fire originated in between the two main doors. Flames were reaching through a gable vent when firefighters first arrived.

The building suffered fire and smoke damage, but there was very little water damage because crews used foam to douse the flames, Dunn said.

About 75 firefighters from six surrounding towns joined Readfield in battling the blaze. Firefighters cleared the scene around 11:30 p.m.
