The Maine Community Foundation is committing $1 million to support working farms in the state.

The foundation is planning to loan the money to the Maine Farmland Trust. The loan represents the foundation's most significant funding commitment in its efforts to connect farms, foods and philanthropy.

The Maine Farmland Trust, based in Belfast, runs a program that buys farmland vulnerable to development. The trust resells the properties at "farmland value" with an agricultural easements in place.
