Jail inmate dies in custody

By Portland Press Herald Staff Report December 12, 2008 05:33 PM

Portland police and the State Medical Examiner are investigating the death of a Cumberland County Jail inmate today.

Paul Galambos III, 26, was under observation in a medical cell when he collapsed at 7:30 a.m., said Cumberland County Chief Deputy Kevin Joyce.
Galambos had injured himself on three occasions beginning Dec. 3, the most recent time being Dec. 11, Joyce said. At that point he was taken to Maine Medical Center for treatment.

Galambos' lawyer had worked with jail officials to find Galambos a bed at the state Riverview Psychiatric Facility. He was released from Maine Med Thursday night and brought back to the jail to await transport to Riverview, in Augusta, Joyce said.

Galambos rose from his mat on the floor this morning, then fell forward. The corrections officer watching him checked on him and he tried to get up and fell again, then was unresponsive.

Officers performed CPR but were unable to revive him.

Galambos was arrested in August after he allegedly robbed a 7-Eleven convenience store in South Portland and was caught in a bar across the street having a drink.
An autopsy will be performed to determine whether Galambos' death was related to his previous injuries, which stemmed from him jumping or falling forward off a desk onto his face and head, Joyce said.
