Generator, food safety are concerns

AUGUSTA - The safe operation of electrical generators and food consumption for those without electrical power are of concern to the Maine Emergency Management Association (MEMA).

Lynette Miller, public information officer for MEMA, said this morning that more than 86,000 Mainers remained without power as of 7 a.m., in the aftermath of Thursday night's storm. People who are using generators and who have been unable to refrigeration food should consult MEMA's http://www.state.me.us/mema web site, Miller said.

Southern and coastal areas around Wiscasset were hardest hit by power outages, Miller said. Gov. John Baldacci made his morning call to MEMA at 9, and was preparing to visit York County, she said.

Miller said that a Kennebec County EMA crew relieved the Lincoln County crew at its headquarters in Wiscasset on Saturday night.

"Local volunteers were literally going door-to-door in some of the small towns of Lincoln County," she said.
