Jeffrey Monroe, Portland's former director of ports and transportation, is the recipient of the Meritorious Public Service Award "in recognition of notable services that have assisted greatly in furthering the aims and functions of the Coast Guard."
Capt. Monroe was honored for his nine years of service on the Navigation Safety Advisory Council, three of which he spent as chairman.
In the presentation made last week in Washington D.C., the commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, noted that "(Monroe's) leadership and dedication to the Navigational Safety Advisory Council, the Marine Safety Program and the Coast Guard are most heartily commended and are keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Coast Guard."
