HAMDEN, Conn. -- A private college is mourning one of its students today - an 19-year-old woman from Winthrop who died Saturday on the Maine Turnpike.
Amanda Garwood of Winthrop died in the head-on, 8:15 p.m. crash when another car, being driven by 25-year-old Tara Gamwell of Portland, crossed the center lane rolled over several times and hit Garwood's car head on.
Gamwell suffered multiple serious injuries and is being treated at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. Maine State Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said troopers are still investigating what caused Gamwell's car to go out of control and into the other lane.
Meanwhile, a Quinnipiac University spokesman says the Hamden school is mourning the death of Garwood, who was a sophomore at the school.
