The U.S. Coast Guard is working today to power up Portland Head Light with a generator, as electricity has not yet been restored at the Fort Williams Park landmark.
A backup battery system had kept the light operating properly since Friday, but the battery ran out this morning, said Sean Walsh of the Coast Guard Aids to Navigation team in South Portland.
"We are in the process of getting the generator going," Walsh said. "We should have it back up and running today."
Mariners depend on Portland Head Light, and nearby lights such as Spring Point and Ram Island Ledge, to navigate the channel that leads in and out of Portland Harbor.
The Coast Guard maintains the light and the fog signal at the lighthouse, which is the property of the town of Cape Elizabeth.
