Cops arrest Detroit runner

Police arrested a Detroit man Saturday morning after he ran from a county deputy into nearby woods.

Three state troopers, one with a tracking dog, and two Somerset County sheriff's deputies finally found Alec Lane, 24, of River Road, dressed in clothing not suited for the frigid temperatures, Deputy Mike Ross said.

"(State Trooper) Shawn Porter was a couple towns over in Unity and he came over with his canine, Tex, and tracked him probably a couple miles through the snow and swamps and found him hiding on the edge of a field," Ross said.

"It was off the Field Road, in a field. He definitely wasn't dressed to be outside."

Ross said the ordeal began just after 10 a.m. when he went to the Lane home to speak with Alec Lane about another matter, when he discovered arrest warrants had been issued in the man's name.

The warrants were for unpaid fines and failure to appear in court on a restitution payment, he said.

"I was trying to talk the father into letting me in the house and by the time I talked him into letting me into the house, Alec had run out the back door and down through the woods," Ross said.

"I chased him as far as I could and went back to my cruiser and called for a dog."

Ross said he took Lane to Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield to be treated for exposure.

"They got him warmed back up, took care of him and I took him to jail," he said.

Ross said he did not charge Lane with any new crimes.

"There's really, unfortunately, no criminal charges for people running in the state of Maine," he said. "He was extremely cooperative once we got him.

"He just didn't want to go to jail."

Lane remained at the Somerset County Jail in East Madison Saturday evening.

Bail was set at $500 cash.
