AUGUSTA -- Fire officials in Augusta said one person was killed in an apartment fire this morning.
Augusta Fire Battalion Chief Charles Squires said the fire destroyed an old apartment building at 31 Winthrop Court, directly behind the old YMCA building.

He said the call came in at 4:30 a.m. and that the blaze is undetermined. Firefighters were still on the scene at 8:30 a.m. He said four other people living in the building were able to escape. No word on the victim's identity at this time.
"I do know we transported two to relatives in Chelsea and two of them were found rooms in town at local hotels through the Red Cross," Squires said this morning.
Augusta received mutual aid from fire departments in Gardiner, Winthrop, Hallowell, Chelsea, Togus and Vassalboro.
Fire marshals were at the scene, he said.
