CARRABASSETT VALLEY -- The western Maine ski town of Carrabassett Valley is endorsing a move to annex part of Redington Township in a move to set up a community wind farm.
The proposal, which was approved by the Carrabassett Valley selectmen Monday night, would also have to be approved by the Legislature and local voters.
Harley Lee of Endless Energy Corp. or Yarmouth wants to build a 30-turbine wind farm on mountains in Redington Township. The plan is similar to one rejected two years ago by state land use regulators.
Supporters envision creating a Sugarloaf Community Wind Farm in which customers would provide capital for the project, and also benefit from lower and more stable energy prices. Supporters say ski resorts could save millions in energy costs.
