WATERVILLE $ Lionel "Lee" A. Cabana on Monday night was re-elected chairman of the Waterville Board of Education.
The vote was unanimous, according to schools finance director, Paula Pooler.
Cabana has served as chairman of the board since February 1999. A retired, 36-year veteran teacher, Cabana taught business at Waterville Senior High School. He holds a master's degree in geography from University of Maine at Farmington; a bachelor's degree in business education from University of Maine at Orono; a bachelor's in education from UMO; and an associate's degree in business education from Thomas College.
He served in the air Naval Reserve for 17 years as a flight communicator on patrol planes.
Sara J. Sylvester was unanimously re-elected executive secretary. Sylvester, who has served on the board since 2004, is administrator of Oak Grove Center in Waterville.
In other matters Monday, the board discussed a proposed renovation project for Waterville Senior High School.
The estimated $15 million project would include installation of a new air exchange system; renovation to science laboratories and athletic areas; new seats and lighting for Trask Auditorium; and bathroom renovations. The school was built in 1962.
Pooler said Tuesday that school officials have met with Oak Point Associates, an architectural, engineering and planning firm with offices in Biddeford, about the high school project.
School officials have told Oak Point representatives what they would like to see in terms of work at the school and now, the school building committee is working to prioritize needs and determine cost, Pooler said.
She said school officials hope some of the smaller work will start in the summer.
