Bundle up, it's cold outside

By Doug Harlow Morning Sentinel Staff Writer January 09, 2009 10:23 AM

After early morning low temperatures in the single digits and teens across Maine and New Hampshire, temperatures today will not show much change, the National Weather Service is reporting.

Highs are expected to be limited to the teens in the mountains and mid 20s along the coast today.

An area of low pressure moving offshore today will support moderate northwest winds from 10 to 20 m.p.h., and clearing skies throughout the day.

Tonight, winds will calm down as a weak area of high pressure builds across both states.

The cold temperatures will persist, however, and overnight lows will dip below zero in the mountains, and in the single digits elsewhere.

For Saturday, expect continued cold temperatures but sunny skies as the high moves out to sea.

Saturday's highs will range from teens in the mountains to mid 20s along the coast.

An area of low pressure will move from the Ohio Valley to the mid-Atlantic coast Saturday night, finally moving offshore Sunday.

Right now, it appears as though this system will produce only snow, with southern areas seeing the highest total accumulations around 3 to 6 inches.

After that, a winter pattern will persist with below normal temperatures and a chance for a couple of light to moderate snow events for next week, the weather service is predicting.
