MaineHealth, owner of Maine Medical Center in Portland, plans to convert a vacant Route 1 office park in Scarborough into the newest campus of its expanding health-care network.
MaineHealth purchased the Orion Center in November for $7.4 million, according to municipal records. The 15.7-acre office park sits just south of the town offices.
Once renovated, the site will be the new home of NorDx, a clinical laboratory that serves health-care providers in New England, and Maine Medical Partners, a back office operation now located in South Portland, said Mark Harris, a spokesman for MaineHealth. The shift to the new site will allow expansion of NorDx, as well as other parts of MaineHealth's nonprofit network, he said.
The company is scheduled to present its renovation plans to the Scarborough Planning Board tonight. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the Scarborough Municipal Building. A formal review and vote on the project is expected later this winter.
Harris said the company hopes to relocate the operation in the spring.
