Kennebec County inmate dies in jail

By Meghan Malloy Kennebec Journal Staff Writer January 12, 2009 05:35 PM

AUGUSTA -- An inmate was found dead at the Kennebec County jail Monday afternoon in what appears to be a suicide, Sheriff Randall Liberty said.

Arthur Traweek, 32, was found hanging by a sheet from a door. Another inmate discovered his body, Liberty said.

"Corrections officers immediately tried to resuscitate him, and Augusta rescue responded," Liberty said. "This is a very unfortunate situation."

Traweek was found at 3:20 p.m. and declared deceased 25 minutes later.

In May 2008, Traweek was the focus of a Kennebec Journal article regarding the Co-Occurring Disorders Court program and its success in helping inmates facing prison time and battling mental illness turn their lives around.

Traweek graduated from the program in February of last year.

Liberty said at the time of Traweek's death, he was in jail for allegedly violating his probation and unauthorized use of property.

It was not immediately clear if Traweek was on suicide watch.
