PITTSFIELD -- Christopher Carr was elected to the Town Council Wednesday in a three-person special election.
The at-large seat was previously held by Michael Cianchette, who resigned after getting a new job.
Carr won the seat with 49 votes, followed by Melissa Hackett, 34, and Jan Laux, 26.
Town Clerk Nicole Nickolan said 109 residents showed up to cast ballots while polls were open from noon to 8 p.m. at the Town Office.
The town has 3,582 registered voters, she said. Even so, the turnout was a "pretty good number," she added.
"I guess it's what could be expected," Nickolan said of the turnout. "I think as cold as it was, part of older generation wasn't safely able to come outside. But it's a special election with a local issue, which usually doesn't have quite as a high turnout when there are state issues involved."
Carr, 40, has been a trooper with Maine State Police for 15 years.
"I've just got family and children in the school system and I have a vested interest in the community," Carr said in an earlier interview. "We ought to have accountability for all parts of town government. I have no hidden agenda or anything. I come with an open mind."
The councilor's term typically last three years, but Cianchette left with a year to go. Now, Carr will have a term that lasts until November 2010 $ when regular elections are held.
The Town Council has five members, plus the mayor and deputy mayor. There are three at-large slots and two districted seats.
Caleb Curtis, who replaced Michael Gray, was elected in the November election and his first meeting was last week.
