A 41-year-old Portland man pleaded not guilty today to charges that he attacked another man with a meat cleaver in November.

Jose Mendoza entered his plea at Cumberland County Superior Court in Portland.

Police say Mendoza attacked a 33-year-old acquaintance on Nov. 28, 2008. The victim suffered injuries to his head and arms.

Mendoza is charged with elevated aggravated assault. He is being held at the Cumberland County Jail on $5,000 cash bail, or $25,000 property bond.
