Machias hospital says it's back in compliance

MACHIAS -- A Machias hospital that was hit with sanctions following investigations that began with last year's death of a patient who wandered from the facility now says it's in compliance with all state and federal regulations.

Down East Community Hospital announced Friday that it passed muster in a follow-up review by a survey team from the state Department of Health and Human Services.

President and CEO Wayne Dodwell quotes survey team members as saying his hospital is back in full compliance with all conditions of participation in the federal Medicare program and with all state hospital licensure regulations. He said official notification is expected in about two weeks.

A DHHS official confirms that the follow-up review was conducted but says the official determination regarding compliance has not yet been made.
