BIDDEFORD - City firefighters were able to contain a fire that started this afternoon at a two-story home on Guinea Road. The two families who live there were able to return to their home tonight.

Lt. David Thorne of the Biddeford Fire Department said crews encountered moderate smoke coming from a rear porch at 177 Guinea Road when they arrived about 3 p.m.

Thorne said the fire started in the area of the porch and spread to a rear wall. Firefighters were able to break through the wall and douse the flames before the fire could spread to the home's interior.

Both families escaped without injury. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
