YORK - A dog was rescued tonight from an ice-covered pond thanks to the efforts of two York police officers and the animal's owner.
Police said they received a call about 8:30 p.m. today from a resident of Locke Lane, who reported hearing a dog barking and then yelping, apparently in fear.
When officers Scott Slawson and Dan Gallant arrived, they met the dog's owner, John Gundulah of York. The men used a safety line to connect themselves to each other before crawling on their bellies across the ice.
Gundulah was able to pull Max, his black Labrador, from the pond, which is between Locke Lane and Sparhawk Way. The dog was taken to a local veterinarian for treatment of hypothermia.
Police said Max, who was in the water for at least 15 minutes, was responding to treatment and seems to be recovering.
