WELLS -- The town shut down Country Meadow Apartments on Monday because of electrical, plumbing and safety problems.
Town officials have been closely monitoring the property at 2124 Sanford Road since tenants complained in January that heating oil had run out. The owner, California-based CD&P LLC, had no money to pay for heat or any other expenses related to the 21-unit property, according to one of the principals.
York County Superior Court G. Arthur Brennan on Thursday signed the order allowing the town to close the building. Tenants had to leave by Monday, according to Jodine Adams, a town code enforcement officer.
One unit was still occupied Monday, and the occupants of another were moving their belongings out, Adams said. She said there were no problems getting them to vacate the property.
The bank holding the mortgage, The Savings Bank of Maine, told town officials last month that it planned to auction the property.
