A foot of snow possible

By Doug Harlow Morning Sentinel Staff Writer February 18, 2009 09:30 AM

Expect clear skies this morning giving way to increasing clouds with a chance of snow developing mid- to late- afternoon.

Snow will overspread the area and become heavy at times later tonight and into Thursday morning, the National Weather Service is reporting. Along the coast the snow will mix with rain.

Snowfall amounts from the storm will range from 4 to 6 inches along the coast with 8 to 14 inches in the interior and foothills, and 4 to 8 inches in the western mountains of Maine and the northern mountains of New Hampshire.

By late Thursday and Thursday night the snow will taper to snow showers with only light additional accumulations expected in the mountains.

By Friday any lingering snow showers will be restricted to the mountains as the low pressure system slowly moves off to the east.

For the first half of the weekend high pressure will allow a nice start, but by Sunday another storm system will be approaching from the west and may become another snow producer.
