The Hallowell Planning Board will hold a public hearing tonight regarding a proposed residential development on the far west side of the city.
The proposed development, Hallowell Heights, is 100 acres owned by Scott Cowger, a former Maine legislator, part owner of the Maple Hill Farm Bed & Breakfast and land developer.
Cowger's intent is to for his development firm, Hanger LLC, to develop 100 of the 130 acres into 37 residential lots. The remaining 30 acres, Cowger said, would remain as open land.
Many residents have voiced their displeasure to the City Council and Planning Board about the proposed development, saying it would destroy animal habitats and bring an significant increase of traffic to the already-narrow Central Street.
The public will have a chance to voice their approval or disapproval tonight to the Planning Board. The hearing will be at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 1 Winthrop St.
