RAYMOND -- The Maine Warden Service said three motor vehicles and three snowmobiles broke through the ice on Sebago Lake this weekend during the annual ice fishing derby in Raymond.
No injuries were reported, but a spokesman for the Warden Service said a pickup truck crashed through an ice pressure ridge about a mile from Raymond Beach and sank to the bottom, a depth estimated at 80 to 125 feet. The driver and a passenger escaped.
A salvage effort was underway Sunday night and Sgt. Tim Spahr said divers had been able to attach floatation devices to the truck, which had risen to the surface of the lake.
Spahr said the Sebago Lake Derby draws hundreds of visitors to the lake for the two-day event. Several people drove their vehicles onto the lake for the activities and to set up fishing shelters.
On Saturday afternoon, Standish Fire Chief Brent Libby said the operator of a car, who was looking for friends became lost. The front end of his car went through the ice, but did not sink.
A third vehicle pulling a trailer became trapped when the ice broke Saturday. Officials said it took nearly eight hours to remove the truck and trailer, its rear end became stuck, from the lake.
Spahr said a snowmobile operator was summonsed for driving recklessly after a game warden witnessed him trying to cross open water near White's Bridge in Standish. The man and his passenger escaped, but their snowmobile sank.
"The lake became a small city for the weekend," Spahr said.
Legally, there is nothing that authorities can do to prevent motor vehicle operators from driving onto an ice-covered body of water.
