It is always difficult to lose original businesses in small communities but let's think about Daren Hachey. This is an opportunity of a lifetime for his family. How else would you like to transform your business. At least it isn't Walmart opening down the road. It is interesting to see how small town communities react to change and development. I guarantee that it will help transform the business district and help build a stronger commercial area. Maybe a new restaurant will open and remain open in Winthrop because of the draw.

Hannaford is a fantastic company who supports local business and farmers. They give a ton of money back to the community and they are progressive with finding the right products for their customers. They also provide a clean and organized place to shop.

My comment was really made out of frustration from the horrible service that Winthrop's Rite Aid has come to be known for. It really was wishful thinking on my part.
I too am a huge fan of the small, home-town atmosphere that Mr. Market offers. I am hopeful that no current employee will lose their job - they really are a great group up there!!report abuse

Hee hee - yes, Scott I can see how you got that picture in your head. Not a pretty one, and not what I had in mind.

However, I DO think that ALL of the current Mr. Market employees should be guaranteed a position in equal or more pay from Hannaford. That should definitely be worked into the transaction.

I got a chuckle out of your comment, by thinking: Pop a couple pills, rinse them down with some booze, then get all dolled up to go out on the town. HAHA! Not saying that that's what you would do, but it all fell into place...LOL!report abuse

This is very forward development for those residing in Winthrop & the several towns surrounding Winthrop. This convenient location will save many on gas money & time, rather than having to currently travel all the way to Lewiston/Auburn or Augusta.

The evil empire strikes again. Last month Hannaford bought the only Stop & Shop in Vermont before the store even opened! It's probably just a matter of time until they buy the Kennebunk Stop & Shop, too. They won't be satisfied until there are no other supermarkets to choose from.report abuseYou must be a registered user of MaineToday.com to post a comment. Register or log in.
