How come in most of these comments nobody talks about parenting and actually like talking to your kids about this stuff. Dang what idea that could be!report abuse

i would not have allowed my daughters to be treated at the school clinic if giveing out birth control pills or condoms with out my permission, which i never would have allowed . was the standard pratice, this is a breach of trust on the part of this school how dare they take away the rights of parents in exchange for health care for their children.report abuse

Oh yeah - and shame on the Maine Republicans who know the federal rules but think wasting taxpayer money in ineffective grandstanding is a good use of their time and our money.report abuse

I guess it must be, shame on the Republicans who controlled the US Congress for almost all of the 90's.

Federal programs that give money to the states mandate that in exchange for receiving monies from the federal government, health care services treat all patients confidentially, including teens. This in turn means that parental control is prohibited unless the state wants to loose all related federal funding.

Past attempts by states to implement parental consent requirements for anything (including teen birth control) funded by these programs have been invalidated when challenged in court. Federal program rules mandating confidentiality preempt state efforts to make new requirements.report abuse
