I believe it was part of the deal from ceding from Standish as well. They did so in an attempt to avoid paying taxes. If this were made to be OK then small communities of retirees or people with no children could cede from their town and pay nothing towards education making it more expensive for the rest of us. Although I don't like it either, I pay taxes toward education and have no kids in he system. Just something we gotta do.

From what I've seen of the State Valuation system it is based in most part on past year sales. So as long as people keep buying houses for $400k+ a year this is just going to get worse for the southern counties. The State Valuation decides on what chunk of subsidy a town/school district receives, while the Local Valuation decides on how to divide the remaining balance (Basically: Budget Amount - State Subsidy Amount) amongst its taxpayers .report abuse

Winston, I'm so tired of that line "we all have to support the school system." So long as the state and towns artificially pump up the value of certain homes so that they can steal disproportionate amounts of money from people regardless of income - there's going to be a fight. Frye residents might have lost this round, but the war's not over. The pay-based-on-valuation model in place today is displacing Mainers from their homes, and encouraging wild spending in the schools because the bulk of the taxes come from non voters. This model is exactly what inspired the American Revolution - and its the root cause of ghost towns on the "rich" coasts, mountains and scenic properties that Mainer's used to call their homes.report abuse

Im sorry but we all have to support the school systems, what your saying would be no differant then me saying I have no children there fore i shouldnt have to pay the town where I live any taxes toward the schools. If this standard were to be used people everywhere would stop having children as their school taxes would be prohibitivly to costly to afford.report abuse
