Nonny - This article had no mention of hospice and isn't the point. Not sure how you came to your conclusion . . .report abuseRick

Nonny - I never criticized hospice or suggested that what they did was assisted suicide. I'm merely stating that assisted suicide is what many people, with no hope of recovery, rather than waste away, would like to have the option to end their life in dignity.report abuseNonny1

Rick, what Hospice does is not considered "assisted suicide." Assisted suicide is illegal. Hospice simply offers comfort thru medication, counseling, guidance, nursing care, doctoring, etc. Anyone can request that Hospice step in to help; they turn down nobody. Income does not matter. I made a call after the nursing home was failing my father. Hospice showed up the very next day for an evaluation. They took over his care within 3 days. If someone is within 13 months of death, they can step in...Years later (in another town), I had to make another call to Hospice. They were there almost immediately. Keeping someone "comfortable" with morphine and helping out the family with moral support is not "assisted suicide." If you want to die, I hope you won't put that burden on someone else. I can't imagine living with the guilt for years to come...report abuseRick

One reason I see the AG actively invloved in this type of situation is that assisted suicide is illegal and many people, with no hope of survival, would like to have the ability to make the decision to die with dignity rather than waste away to skin and bones and constant pain.report abuseYou must be a registered user of MaineToday.com to post a comment.
