It is the same as if they were spending the money on drugs. If they test positve for drugs or smokes, they should not be receiving welfare. Just how long are we going to keep giving up our tax dollars to support people's nasty ciggarette habits.
Cigarettes are so darn nasty that the smell off someone that has just smoked will make one gag!
I personally cannot stand the smell of it,it is the most disgusting thing to have your breath taken away from the smell of a ciggarette! Outlaw the darn things! Then, those that spend their wlefare money on smokes, cannot get welfare to pay for life saving surgeries to save their lives.
Yesterday I walked past 2 women outside the grocery store, that were smoking and was left coughing and gagging.
I thought that businesses that had employees that smoked, are supposed to be 50 ft. from a building's enterence?
Not all obey that rule and it is sooo gross to have to walk pass that to get into or out of a store.
Aren't there like 300 different gases that are made when a ciggarette burns?
Time to legalize marijuana and tax that too!report abuse

I think that folks who collect welfare should have their assistance taken away if they smoke. If they are buying smokes, where does the money come from to feed the children. The money from welfare is for food and housing, not smokes.

I think that the media should investigate all these Maine Health Associations, Heart, Lung, etc. and see just how much of these tax dollars go to senior management salaries and expenses. I think every tax payer in this State would be very upset if they knew the truth. Even the non smokers.report abuseMaineguy207

Not only are the Democrats and the Governor looking at increasing Cigarettes another $1.00 per pack ($10.00 per Carton) they want to increase "roll your own tobacco's" 80% tax, yes, you read it right, 80%. They are looking at increasing little cigars to the same tax structure as cigarettes and this means they want $30.00 per carton on ALL LITTLE CIGARS. Don't be fooled by the media and your political leaders when they lead you to think they only want to increase cigarettes another $1.00 per pack. I am so sick of hearing the radio ad that is currently running on Clear Channel Radio leading everyone to believe that 4 out of 5 maine people support these increases. The are misleading the public and this is just not right! I don't smoke, never have, and hope my children don't, but I do belive its our right to make the choice. Our Governor and those politicians that support these outrageous tax increases are really huring both Maine Retailers and the Citizens of this State. You better stand up and be noticed in Augusta. I urge you to contact your Senators and Legislators in Augusta immediately and tell them you don't support these outrageous taxes.report abuseYou must be a registered user of MaineToday.com to post a comment.
