Frank,

Have you been to college? I guess some of the students would have a hard time working in the woods, as you say, for "12 hours a day" (presumes that's the common 5 day work schedule for Maine logging jobs, which I wonder if that's correct. But I wonder how many loggers would have a really easy time pursuing a 12-hour-a-day curriculum of, say, Calculus 2, Molecular Biology, American History II, Philosophy, and Organic Chemistry?
While there are misconceptions about what the blue collar world is like among SOME who are in college (most college students actually worked blue collar jobs through high school AND during college), there are certainly misconceptions among some who never went to college about what that is like.
Contrary to your statement, the vast number of college students aren't from "wealthy" families, or even white collar families. Most are holding on to make it through with a combination of loans and family contributions that are stretched to the max.
If you think college is any more of a breeze than working in logging, please think again. The main difference may be that one is investing in the future, while the other is part of a hands on career.
Many people deserve respect, both those who work with their hands and those who are preparing for challenging careers in business, medicine, etc.
What do you think happens in college? A big 24/7 kegger?
The next time you make a statement clearly denegrating people in college as of a particular socio-economic strata (or whether college is some breeze, as if you just buy your way through), ask yourself if you even have a clue what you're talking about.report abuse

Ah, the upper crust trying fake man-hood, I see. Let 'em try some of these pursuits 12 hours a day for a few months and se how much fun they have.report abuse
